How we grade the weather

We grade a connection by how often it drops while the device is online — reconnects per online-hour — not by raw connectivity, so a device that sleeps to save power isn't punished for being offline by design. Internet health is that grade measured on always-on devices (online 90%+ of the day, for whom a reconnect is a real drop, never a scheduled wake), scored 0–100 against what a perfect always-on connection would deliver. Icons and statuses follow that number on one absolute scale — Clear at 95+, Partly cloudy from 85, Stormy below — the same bar for every region, so “stormy” always means the internet there is genuinely below standard, never “below its own usual”. Movement against a region's own recent trend appears as a secondary note (“vs its usual trend”), not as the weather itself. A brand-new region — or a group too small to have an always-on cohort — reports on its whole-fleet composite until one exists. The bar on each row is the grade mix; the percentage beside it is average time connected — a separate axis.

Each report covers the last 24 hours of devices seen — today's active fleet, not a rolling week — so the trend actually moves day to day. Average time online includes devices that sleep by design, which is why it undersells the fleet: the honest infrastructure story is the always-on share — the portion of devices online 90%+ of the day — and that cohort's uptime, both plain distribution facts with nothing excluded. The same duty-cycling gives the daily series a weekday/weekend rhythm (more sleepy devices report on weekdays); the 7-day average line above smooths exactly that. We report cellular vs. Starlink as an observed difference, not a verdict — usage and power still color it. And if most regions ever dip at once, we flag the day as a data anomaly instead of a global storm — the internet doesn't fail everywhere simultaneously, but a measurement pipeline can.

Confidence, privacy & sources

The Sample dots show how much data backs a row — a larger device sample means a more reliable average (we never publish exact counts). Tables are ordered by the internet-health figure shown, with nothing hidden behind it — so a region running on a handful of always-on devices can sit near the top on thin evidence. Check its dots before drawing a conclusion. Aggregates only: any region with fewer than 20 devices is omitted, and a network-class row within a region needs at least 5 devices — below that, an “average” is close to one device's raw telemetry; no counts, IPs, or user data are ever published.
